En met deze zelfkennis vertrek ik op 11 oktober voor een halfjaar naar Peru.

Elke blog die ik schrijf is (zonder foto’s) één A4’tje lang in Word, deze is meer dan twee pagina’s dus pak er maar wat te drinken en wat nootjes bij:

Finland ligt zó dichtbij Nederland. Beide lid van de EU, de inwoners zien er hetzelfde uit en je verwacht dat de landen op elkaar lijken. Zoals jullie in al m’n vorige blogs hebben gelezen, zijn in mijn ogen deze twee landen wat betreft vrijwel alles een volledig contrast van elkaar. Als twee landen binnen Europa al zóveel van elkaar verschillen wil ik met m’n eigen ogen zien hoe het er aan de andere kant van de wereld aan toegaat.

Ik ga naar Cusco. Een stad in het zuiden van Peru, bijna Bolivia. Het is de hoofdstad van het rijk van de Inca’s waar de Machu Picchu ontdekt is. Cusco is een van de hoogste steden van de wereld. Het ligt in de Andesgebergte 3340 meter boven het zeeniveau. Waar ik hier dus omringt wordt door de zee ga ik die daar niet zien. Ik zal op het begin ook wel pillen moeten slikken vanwege het gebrek aan zuurstof. Het schijnt dat meer dan de helft van de toeristen het hoogteverschil niet aankan. Voor Nederlanders moet dit dan waarschijnlijk extra moeilijk zijn aangezien wij zelfs onder het zeeniveau leven.

Ik ga van een van de veiligste landen van de wereld naar een land waar ik m’n Nike-schoenen beter thuis kan laten. Als ze daar een blanke (ofwel Gringo, van: Greens go home!) zien denken ze meteen dat er geld te halen valt. De grootste cultuurschok gaat denk zijn dat ik hier in Finland geleerd heb mensen heel erg te vertrouwen. Hier kan je bij wijze van een vreemde vragen even op je portemonnee te letten en een uur later krijg je hem weer terug. Tijdens het uitgaan hier gooi ik m’n rugzak in een hoek en kijk ik er niet meer naar om. In Finland weten ze niet eens wat diefstal betekent, in Peru hebben ze er patent op.

Oké, eerlijk: als ik het nu voor het zeggen had zou ik het liefst nog gewoon voor onbepaalde tijd (lees; voor altijd) in Finland blijven. Echter ben ik al met de stappen naar Peru begonnen toen ik pas amper in Finland was en zit ik er inmiddels al veel te diep in om het te laten varen. Ik heb daar al een woning, werk en het belangrijkste een studiebeurs.

Ik weet dat ik Finland ga missen en dus ben ik naar de positieve dingen opzoek. Een van de voornaamste dingen is dat Finland veel te duur is en ik vertrek nu naar een land waar ik een driegangenmenu voor omgerekend vier euro kan krijgen. Als tweede: de Finse keuken is niet zo spectaculair terwijl de Peruviaanse keuken als een van de beste van de wereld gezien wordt. In Peru worden cavia’s trouwens niet gezien als huisdier maar worden ze gefokt en zijn ze een van de populairste vleesgerechten. Een andere reden waarom ik voor Peru gekozen heb is dat van die honderden documentaires die ik op National GeoGraphic gezien heb ik de geschiedenis van de Maya’s en de Inca’s echt wel het meest interessant vindt: De WK-finale van 2010 was niet het enige moment dat Spanje zichzelf iets onterecht toe-eigende. Ondanks dat Spanje in de zestiende eeuw de boel maar weer eens kwam verstoren en de Inca’s probeerde uit te roeien is er nog steeds veel van de Inca-cultuur terug te zien in het dagelijkse leven van Cusco.

Vierde pluspunt is dat de taal te begrijpen is terwijl Fins echt nergens opslaat. Iedereen hier in Finland spreekt wel Engels, maar toch kan ik niet met ze communiceren in hun eigen taal waardoor ik me altijd respectloos voel.

In Peru en in de meeste landen in Zuid-Amerika spreken ze geen Engels, dus dat wordt ook weer lachen. In Peru spreekt maar 8% Engels en dat is dan weer voornamelijk in Lima. In de rest van het land spreekt vrijwel iedereen uitsluitend Spaans. Ik heb op school wel Spaanse lessen gehad, daar ben ik zelfs nog voor geslaagd maar toen ik hier laatst Spaans probeerde te praten met een Mexicaan viel ik volledig door de mand dus daar ga ik de komende weken nog maar eens wat tijd in investeren.

De producten die we op m’n stage maken zijn vooral voor bedrijven als Save the Children, World vision, UNICEF, Het Rode Kruis enz. Daardoor heb ik al veel over deze landen geleerd. Peru is een derdewereldland en ik ben nog nooit in een ontwikkelingsland geweest. Het kan goed dat ik opeens een week niet bereikbaar ben omdat de hele stad zonder stroom en energie zit. Of dat je opeens nergens meer water kan tappen.

Maar toch, na al die ongekende dingen die ik hier in Helsinki heb meegemaakt blijf ik mijn eerste week hier als de leukste zien. Ik kwam aan en kende niks of niemand. Ik wist niet eens waar de dichtstbijzijnde winkel was, hoe ik naar het centrum moest reizen en wist niks van het land. De eerste week ging ik voor het eerst de stad verkennen, ik maakte vrienden en maakte kennis met de mooie natuur die ze hier hebben. De eerste keer dat ik uitging waren we met zes mensen van zes verschillende nationaliteiten. Het is apart hoe snel ik me hier heb ingeburgerd en hoe thuis ik me voel. Dit weer allemaal voor het eerst ontdekken kijk ik enorm naar uit, dat is het leukste van reizen.

Oja, nu heb ik nog helemaal niet verteld wat ik daar aan de andere kant van de wereld ga doen: Omdat het land zo onderontwikkeld is en het onderwijs zwaar onder de maat ga ik kijken of ik mezelf daarin nuttig kan maken. Op ‘’Colegio Ava’’ hebben ze bij de sportklassen voor in totaal 1500 leerlingen één leraar. De diehards die mijn blogs sinds het begin volgen hebben kunnen zien hoe ik mijn passie voor sport de afgelopen maanden weer volledig heb terugveroverd, die leraar ga ik dus ondersteunen met het geven van sportlessen, maar wellicht ook wel rekenen, taal enz.

Dus ja, begin oktober kom ik vanuit Helsinki eerst een paar dagen terug naar Nederland. 11 oktober stap ik op het vliegtuig naar Madrid, vanaf daar naar Lima en dan naar Cusco. Zes maanden later op 5 april kom ik, als ik dan nog leef, terug.

I'm moving to the Inca capital in Peru for six months

And with this self-knowledge I’m going to Peru on October the 11th for six months.

Every blog I usually write is (without photos) one page long in Word, this one was more than two pages so grab a drink and some snacks with it:

Finland is geographically so close to The Netherlands. Both they are members of the EU, the people look the same and you expect the countries to look alike. As you have read in all my previous blogs, in my opinion these two countries are a complete opposite in almost everything. If two countries in Europe differ so much from each other, I want to see with my own eyes what it is like on the other side of the world.

I'm going to Cusco. A city in the south of Peru, almost Bolivia. It is the capital of the Inca Empire where Machu Picchu was discovered. Cusco is one of the highest cities in the world. It’s located in the Andes Mountains 3340 meters above sea level. So, where I am surrounded by the sea in Helsinki, I will not see it there. I will also probably have to take pills at the beginning because of the lack of oxygen. Apparently more than half of the tourists can't handle the height difference. This must be extra difficult for the Dutch, since we even live below sea level in Netherlands.

I'm going from one of the safest countries in the world to a country where it's better to leave my Nike shoes at home. When they see a white (or Gringo, from: Greens go home!) there, they immediately think that there is money to take. I think the biggest culture shock is that I learned to trust people very much here in Finland. Here you can ask a stranger to watch your wallet and an hour later you get it back. When going out here, I throw my backpack in a corner and don't have to watch it anymore. In Finland they don't even know what theft means, in Peru they have a patent for it.

Okay, honestly: if I had to decide now, I would prefer to stay in Finland indefinitely (read; forever). However, I already start with his Peru-project when I was barely in Finland and I'm already too deep into it to let it go. I already have a house there, work and most importantly a scholarship.

I know I'm going to miss Finland and so I'm looking for the positives. One of the main things is that Finland is way too expensive and I am now leaving for a country where I can get a three-course meal for four euros. Second, the Finnish cuisine is not that spectacular while the Peruvian cuisine is considered one of the best in the world. In Peru, guinea pigs are not seen as pets but are known to be one of the most popular meat dishes. Another reason why I chose Peru is that of the hundreds, probably thousands, of documentaries I've seen on National Geographic, I find the history of the Maya and the Incas the most interesting: The 2010 World Cup final was not the only moment that Spain misappropriated something. Despite the fact that Spain came to disrupt things again in the sixteenth century and try to exterminate the Incas, much of the Inca culture can still be seen in the daily life of Cusco.

 Fourth plus is that the Spanish language is understandable while Finnish really makes no sense. Everyone here in Finland speaks English, yet I can't communicate with them in their own language, which makes me feel disrespectful all the time.

In Peru and in most countries in South America the people don't speak any English, so that's going to be fun. In Peru only 8% of the population speak English and that is mainly in Lima. In the other parts of the country, almost everyone speaks exclusively Spanish. I did have Spanish lessons at school, I even passed that, but when I tried to speak Spanish with a Mexican recently here in Helsinki, it didn’t make any sense to him, so I'm going to invest some time in that in the next coming weeks.

The products we make during my internship are mainly for companies such as Save the Children, World vision, UNICEF, The Red Cross, etc. As a result, I have already learned a lot about poor countries. Peru is a third world country and I have never been to a developing country before. It is possible that I will be unavailable for a week because the entire city is without electricity and energy. Or that suddenly there is no access to tap water.

But still, after all the unprecedented things I experienced here in Helsinki, I'm looking forward to this travel because I still see my first week here as my favorite. I arrived and didn't know anything or anyone. I didn't even know where the nearest store was, how to travel to the center and didn't know anything about the country. The first week I went to explore the city for the first time, I made friends and got to know the beautiful nature they have here. The first time I went out here it was with six people of six different nationalities. It is strange how quickly I have settled in here and how it feels like home to me. I'm really looking forward to discovering all of this again for the first time in Cusco, that's the best thing about those long travels.

Oh well, I haven't told you what I'm going to do there on the other side of the world: Because the country is so underdeveloped and education is seriously below par, I'm going to see if I can make myself useful in it. At "Colegio Ava" they have just one teacher in the sports classes for a total of 1500 students. The diehards among you who have followed my blogs since the beginning have seen how I have completely recaptured my passion for sports in recent months. So I will support that teacher with giving sports lessons, but perhaps also math, languages etc.

So yeah, at the beginning of October I will first return to the Netherlands from Helsinki for a few days. The eleventh of October I get on a plane to Madrid, from there to Lima and then Cusco. Six months later April the 5th, if I'm still alive, I'll be back.
